Mike Nordeen joined Sureify after years leading software and IT initiatives in the insurance space. He wanted the opportunity to help build something new, work alongside smart, fun people, and have a voice in shaping how products and processes evolve.
Today, Mike serves as a Senior Client Solutions Architect, helping clients successfully implement CoreCONNECT™ while bridging the gap between technical teams and business leaders. We sat down with Mike to learn more about his career journey, what makes Sureify unique, and why staying active in the conversation has been one of the most valuable lessons of his career.
Q: How long have you been with Sureify, and what drew you here?
Mike: I joined Sureify in September 2024. At the time, I was looking for an opportunity where I could help build something instead of maintaining what already existed.
What really stood out to me was that Sureify is continuously investing in creating, evolving, and growing its platform. You have a chance to influence how things are built, not just execute against someone else’s vision. The interview process was also very intentional. By the end of it, I could see how much the company values hiring the right people and building a collaborative culture.
The people here are incredibly smart, and everyone is focused on solving problems together. It’s not about being the loudest voice in the room, it’s about bringing the best ideas forward.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your career background?
Mike: I’ve spent more than two decades in software and insurance technology, primarily in the property & casualty industry. Throughout my career I’ve worked in software development, IT leadership, carrier management systems, project delivery, and customer implementations.
Those experiences gave me a broad perspective that now helps me connect technical teams, business stakeholders, and customers as we solve complex implementation challenges together.
Q: What does a typical week look like for you at Sureify?
Mike: My role goes beyond solution architecture. I spend a lot of time working directly with clients, coordinating projects, and making sure the right people are involved in the right conversations.
A typical week includes project management, customer meetings, technical design discussions, and helping teams stay aligned so we can keep moving forward. One of the things I enjoy most is being able to go deep enough technically with the client engineering team while also communicating effectively with business leaders and executives.
Q: Which Sureify principle resonates most with you, and why?
Mike: Several of Sureify’s principles resonate with me, especially Results Over Status, People Matter, and Long-Term Thinking.
What I appreciate most is that people leave their egos at the door. Everyone contributes ideas, and the best idea wins regardless of who brought it to the table. Sureify has done a good job fostering an environment where collaboration happens naturally.
Q: What’s a project or accomplishment at Sureify that you’re especially proud of?
Mike: I’m especially proud of helping take one of our client implementations from signing through production.
One of my biggest goals has been becoming a trusted resource for our clients by actively listening, understanding their needs, and helping shape solutions instead of simply reacting to requests. Being part of those conversations made a huge difference in the project’s success.
Q: What has Sureify’s culture meant to you, and how has it evolved since you started?
Mike: The culture is authentic, intelligent, and incredibly collaborative. I’ve learned more here than I expected because everyone is willing to share knowledge and invest in one another. Even though life and annuity was a new industry for me, I always felt supported because there’s a genuine focus on continuous learning and improving together.
Q: What’s one lesson your career has taught you so far?
Mike: Be part of the conversation. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or contribute ideas, even if you’re not expected to have all the answers. Some of the biggest project delays I’ve seen happened because the right people weren’t involved early enough.
Q: What advice would you give someone joining Sureify today?
Mike: Stay curious and don’t wait for permission to improve things. Priorities move fast at Sureify, and what isn’t important today could become critical tomorrow. If you spot a problem, inefficiency, or opportunity, say something. You may be the first person to notice it, and that’s a good thing. We value people who identify problems, bring ideas forward, and help solve them.
Q: What skill are you currently working to improve?
Mike: I’ve been spending a lot of time applying AI to large-scale data analysis.
We’re using AI to ingest customer specs and technical documentation, build formal data schemas, and analyze production-scale data for quality and completeness before implementations move forward. It’s a practical way we’re using AI to solve real customer challenges.
Q: Outside of work, what keeps you busy?
Mike: I’m an avid mountain biker, which is funny because I live in Illinois, one of the flattest states in the country.
I travel frequently with my bike and also volunteer with a nonprofit, CAMBr, that builds and maintains legal mountain bike trail systems around Chicago. The trail system I primarily support is one of the busiest in the country, and it’s rewarding to help create spaces that people can enjoy outdoors.
Q: What’s something your teammates would be surprised to learn about you?
Mike: I’m also a gardener. I’m certainly not an expert, but I enjoy creating an ecosystem in my backyard using native Illinois plants that attract pollinators and butterflies. It’s a completely different pace from work, and I find it rewarding.
Q: Let’s leave off with a deeply personal one. What is your go-to coffee order?
Mike: Fresh-ground black light roast whenever I can get it. Otherwise, a black Americano (no cream, no sugar).
